Any business that lends money or provides you with credit, often makes decisions which are influenced by a person’s credit record.
Your credit worthiness is largely determined by what is recorded on your Personal Credit File, which is held by an organisation called Veda Advantage. They used to be called Baycorp and Baycorp Advantage.
When you apply anywhere for credit a lender can check to see how credit worthy you are based on what is recorded on your personal credit file. Examples are when applying for: a telephone, hire purchase, car loan, bank loan, personal loan, etc. It is important to note that no one can check your credit record without your permission.
In view of the importance that credit providers attach to your personal credit file, it would be advantageous for you to be aware
of exactly what is recorded on your credit file. This is so that you can get an idea of how credit worthy you are, and can therefore plan accordingly. For example, if you have a number of large defaults in the thousands of dollars it may not be suitable to apply for a 100% home loan, as it is likely that your credit record would not be suitable for that type of loan, and you would most probably get knocked back. For this reason you should periodically check your personal credit file to ensure that the information that the credit reporting agency (C.R.A.) has on record about you, is accurate. Veda Advantage not only holds your credit file, but also holds files of about another 12 million other Australians
It should be noted that only you can request a copy of your own personal credit file. So, if there are two home loan applicants (say husband and wife), then each of you will need to apply for your own file from Veda Advantage.
Or, you can request it by telephone on 1300 762 207. Veda Advantage then should dispatch a copy of your Personal Credit File to you within one working day via mail, email, or fax, for a fee of $27.00 including GST. If via mail allow the one working day for dispatch, plus extra time for postage.
Alternatively, if you can afford to wait about two weeks, Veda Advantage can send you a copy of your file for FREE. For the free service, your credit file should be dispatched within 10 working days of your request.. Allow extra time for postage.
Please do not rely on these times as there can be dalays due things such as a request for further information. In some cases additional verification of identity can be called for.
It should be noted that only you can request a copy of your own personal credit file. So, if there are two home loan applicants (say husband and wife), then each of you will need to apply for your own credit file from Veda Advantage.
You will need to provide the following information to Veda Advantage when you apply for a copy of your personal credit file:
> Your full name
> Your driver's license number
> A daytime telephone number
> Your current residential address
> Your previous addresses
> Your date of birth
