The Upper North Shore suburbs of Sydney is generally a well to do area with established houses on larger blocks of land close to good schools. It is well known for its leafy suburbs with plenty of well established large trees and great gardens. Many of the houses have swimming pools and some have tennis courts.

There are many areas in the Upper North Shore where the houses back onto bushland. This offers a great lifestyle alternative for those looking to live closer to nature, but still wanting to be close to all the amenities. Another attraction is the good schools that are available in so many parts of the Sydney's Upper North Shore. There are both public schools as well as private schools in the area. People with families are attracted to the area because they can live in an area that is not too far from the city or the beaches, on a nice size block of land, in a good house, in a safe area with good schools, as well as being close to all the other amenities that one needs.

Sydney Upper North Shore is undergoing some significant development around the major regional centers and public transport hubs, particularly along the rail route and the Pacific Highway.

The population densities on the Sydney Upper North Shore are increasing and is therefore placing some pressure on the surrounding infrastructure. For example, 10 years ago it was no problem whatsoever finding a parking spot at the St Ives Shopping Village. Now you have to ride around the car park a bit to get a parking spot. Roads such as the Pacific Highway, major arterial roads and other surrounding roads have had increases in traffic volumes. However, despite all this, the Sydney Upper North Shore is still a great place to live and is well sough after with its leafy suburbs, good schools and great family oriented amenities.

The Draft Ku Ring-Gai Local Environmental Plan allows for increase in housing densities in town centres such as Turramurra, St Ives, Gordon, Pymble, Roseville and Lindfield. Housing densities are also increasing in Artarmon, Chatswood, Willoughby, St Leonards, and Hornsby, as is the case around many other parts of Sydney. In the near future there should be more flats available on the upper north shore for those looking to downsize.
